Improving access to quality physical rehabilitation in conflict-hit countries

We support new ways of financing Humanitarian Action to increase excellence in actions

  • WHAT WE DO

As part of the targets to be achieved, within the Sustainable Development Goal number 10 - Reduction of inequalities - of the 2030 Agenda, the promotion of the inclusion of all people, regardless of their condition, including disability, stands out.

To this end, our foundation is part of a public-private partnership, promoted by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which aims to promote new formulas for financing humanitarian aid and develop the Physical Rehabilitation Program through the construction of new efficient rehabilitation centers in the countries in which the ICRC is operational.

  • WHO IT'S FOR

This program is aimed at people in need of physical rehabilitation in Nigeria, Mali and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Of the 90 million people with physical disabilities who need a mobility device around the world, only 10%, on average, have access to adequate physical rehabilitation services, which leads to social and economic exclusion.

  • HOW WE HELP

”la Caixa” Foundation, together with the other initial partners, outcome funders, of the alliance - governments of Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and the United Kingdom - has committed a contribution to the ICRC, conditioned on the results. With this guarantee, social investors (New Re, part of the Munich Re Group, among others) make their investments. At the end of the agreed period, the initial partners will deliver their contributions to the ICRC according to the results achieved. In turn, these funds will be used to return their contribution to social investors.

  • WHERE ARE WE?

Three new rehabilitation centers in Africa (Maiduguri -Nigeria-, Mopti-Mali and Kinshasa -Democratic Republic of the Congo-) are being built and put into operation over a period of five years, which will serve thousands of people. These centers will have measures to improve efficiency, to give greater service to the people who will be attended there.
