  • THE SITE

CosmoCaixa occupies the premises of what was the first interactive Science Museum in Spain, inaugurated in 1981. On a site covering more than 50,000 m² and with a floor area of 30,000 m² devoted to promoting science, the current venue occupies four times more space than the first Science Museum.

This new facility includes nine floors, six of them underground but with natural light, and a large public plaza offering views of the city.

  • A LITTLE HISTORY

In 1904, following the Modernista style of the time, the architect Josep Domènech i Estapà constructed the building that would house the Amparo de Santa Lucía residential home for 75 years.

In 1979 "la Caixa" Foundation commissioned the architects Jordi Garcés and Enric Sòria to remodel and enlarge the building to house the Science Museum, becoming Spain's first interactive museum dealing with scientific themes.

Finally, on the 25th of September 2004, after a second refurbishment carried out by the architects Robert and Esteve Terradas, the CosmoCaixa centre opened its doors, becoming one of the world's most modern science museums.

Care was taken during the remodelling to conserve and restore the walls of the old Modernista building with its brick finish, considerably enlarging the old facility with a new focus on glass and steel.
